I’m suspicious of what is charming when I’m making paintings, or rather, I like the charming elements that I haven't consciously made up.
The ones that come through organically, naturally or by accident, I like.
I don’t like when I see myself in my pictures, trying to be charming.

If the subject matter appears cute, a baby elephant for example, it must feel like it belongs there, that it was destined to be so, and that the the whole painting would be unimaginable otherwise.
That’s what makes it ok.

It is a fine line to tread. I often rebuke myself.
